Preparing for the EU PFAS Restriction

2026.11.03 195

Why healthcare manufacturers should evaluate PFAS-free membranes now?

Switching the filter material in a validated medical product can take up to two years. The EU regulatory clock is already ticking.

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have long been valued in medical filtration for their chemical resistance, thermal stability, and water repellency. But the same stability means many PFAS barely break down in the environment. Therefore, they are the target of the EU’s proposed universal PFAS restriction under REACH. The final rules are not yet set, but the direction is clear.

For pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, and medical device manufacturers, replacing a material means performance testing, product validation, and supplier qualification, typically 6 to 24 months or longer. Manufacturers that start evaluating PFAS-free membrane filters today will have time to adapt as the regulations take shape, and far less risk when the transition comes. Whereas for end users, evaluating PFAS-free membrane filters also ensures sufficient time for regulatory change to  reduce transition risk.

Cobetter PFAS-Free Membranes: Exploring Alternatives for Medical Filtration

As interest in PFAS-free materials grows across the healthcare industry, Cobetter is actively expanding its portfolio of PFAS-free filtration solutions, designed to meet the diverse material, retention, and performance requirements of a wide range of medical applications.

1. Multi-Material, Multi-Pore-Size Portfolio for Greater Choice

Cobetter offers PFAS-free membranes in materials including polyethersulfone (PES) and acrylic copolymer, across a range of pore sizes and product formats, giving customers greater flexibility in design. For each application, we can help evaluate key membrane attributes, including hydrophobicity, air permeability, water entry pressure, and component compatibility, to identify the PFAS-free filtration solution best suited to the customer’s product requirements.

2. Proven Reliability, Backed by Typical Performance Data

Moving to PFAS-free does not have to mean compromising on performance. For specific applications, Cobetter can provide comparative typical performance data and supporting tests to help customers assess alternative materials for air permeability, liquid barrier performance, hydrophobicity, and performance consistency. This gives customers a sound, data-driven basis for material selection, product development, and subsequent validation.

Potential applications include medical vent filters, ostomy bag filter components, negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) devices, and other membrane-based medical devices. It’s recommended to check and confirm against the product design, operating environgment and validation requirements for specific usage.

3. Beyond Membranes: A Platform Approach to PFAS-Free Solutions

At Cobetter, we believe the transition to PFAS-free is more than a material swap. It is a systematic process of evaluation and solution development, built around the end application.

Drawing on a multi-material membrane portfolio, in-house application development expertise, and testing support from our CNAS-accredited laboratory, Cobetter goes beyond supplying PFAS-free membranes. We offer integrated solutions from material selection through to finished filter assemblies, supporting customers at every stage of material evaluation, product development, and performance verification.

For example, Cobetter’s PFAS-free hydrophobic PES membrane filters offer a new material option for selected medical and single-use system applications. To learn more about their features, performance, and application advantages, read our technical article:
