Ultrafiltration is an important step to separate, purify and concentrate protein solutions in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, improving production capacity and recovery rate. The retention capacity of ultrafiltration membranes are characterized by the molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of the target protein, typically ranging from 1kDa to 1000kDa.
Determine the MWCO of Ultrafiltration Membrane
- To have the target macromolecule permeate the membrane, generally choose an ultrafiltration membrane with a MWCO that is 3-5 times bigger than the MW of target macromolecule.
- To have the target macromolecule to be retained, generally choose an ultrafiltration membrane with a MWCO that is 3-5 times smaller than the MW of target macromolecule.
